A Psychological Thriller – A serialized story in 20 chapters
Prologue The Nightmare Begins
Zara Caldwell awoke to the sound of footsteps.
The soft shuffle of bare feet on her hardwood floors was nearly imperceptible, but she heard it. Felt it. The kind of sound that seeps into your subconscious before your conscious mind can place it.
She sat up, her heart pounding. Her penthouse in Tribeca — spacious, meticulously designed, hers — was bathed in the dim glow of city lights filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, Manhattan buzzed as it always did, but inside, something was wrong.
Zara swung her legs over the side of the bed and listened. Silence. For a moment, she thought she had imagined it. Stress, maybe. Too many late nights at Harrington Wolfe & Co., the top-tier branding agency where she was a senior strategist.
Then, a whisper of movement.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand, ready to call 911, but then —
A silhouette.
Zara’s breath caught. A woman stood in front of her vanity mirror, her back to her. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in loose, expensive waves. She was barefoot, wearing one of Zara’s silk robes — the emerald green one that matched her eyes, the one she wore when she wanted to feel powerful.
The woman lifted a tube of lipstick — Zara’s signature shade, Harrington Red — and traced the color over her lips with practiced ease.
Zara knew before the woman turned around.
Nia.
She moved with slow deliberation, like a starlet in an old Hollywood film, finally meeting Zara’s gaze through the mirror’s reflection.
“I think this suits me better,” Nia said, smiling.
Her voice was soft, intimate. Possessive.
And then —
Darkness.
