Zara had one shot. She couldn’t fight this from the outside anymore. She had to get back in.
She kept it simple, a plain black dress, low heels, a sleeker hairstyle. This wasn’t the polished Zara Caldwell. This was just another woman in New York. Invisible. Unbothered.
She crossed the city under gray skies and heavier thoughts. The building loomed in front of her.
Grayson Digital. The last place she should be returning to. But it was the only way.
She walked in like she belonged, no badge, no hesitation. Just the right blend of confidence and silence.
And there, sitting at Ethan’s desk like she had always been meant to be there, was Nia.
Zara stepped forward. Steady. Her voice didn’t waver.
“Hello, Tiana.”
Nia’s head snapped up. A flicker, recognition. Fear.
Zara tilted her head with cold poise.
“You didn’t think I’d figure it out?”
Nia blinked slowly, then composed herself.
“Zara, you shouldn’t be here.”
“Neither should you.”
A pause. Then Nia laughed, low, slow, confident. Amused.
“Sweetheart,” she said, brushing invisible dust off Ethan’s chair. “It’s already over.”
But in that moment, Zara saw it, in Nia’s eyes.
It wasn’t over.
It had only just begun.
