Defining Yourself: Why Growth, Not Perfection, Matters

Starting something new is always exciting—and a little intimidating. Whether it’s a podcast, a blog, or any passion project, there’s always someone ready to tell you what you’re doing wrong or who you should be. But here’s the thing: I’m not looking for perfection. I’m looking to grow.

Recently, I appeared on a podcast and participated in a 45-minute talk show. I shared a short clip—less than a minute—on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp stories. One of my coworkers saw it and commented, “It’s obvious it’s your first time—you have room to improve.” Then he went on to give me unsolicited advice about what I should do, even suggesting I emulate someone else’s hair style, like Juju the basketball player, and her iconic haircut. While I appreciate constructive feedback, I couldn’t help but think: Why is the focus always on what someone should be instead of celebrating what they are?

This moment reminded me why I started sharing my journey in the first place. It wasn’t to meet someone else’s expectations or to perfectly imitate a successful formula. I’m doing this to define myself, to express my story, and to inspire others to do the same. It’s about being unboxed and free.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a podcast, a blog, or any meaningful dream. Growth takes time, practice, and persistence. Every project has its humble beginnings, and every expert was once a beginner. Even the best marathon runners started with baby steps, training day after day until they became the champions we celebrate.

To anyone starting something new—whether it’s a blog, a business, or a creative project—please remember this: You’re not here to meet someone else’s standards. You’re here to define your own journey. There will always be voices trying to tell you who you should be or how you should do things, but you’re the only one who gets to decide. Trust your process. Embrace your uniqueness. And keep going.

When people comment, critique, or give unsolicited advice, remember this: It just means they’re noticing. And that’s a good thing. Don’t let their words set you back. Let them remind you that every step forward is progress, and that growth comes from showing up, trying, and learning as you go.

Perfection is overrated. Growth is where the magic happens. As I continue on this journey, I hope to inspire others to ignore the noise, celebrate their progress, and own their path. Because at the end of the day, the only person who gets to define you—is you.

With love and strength,

Priscilla Sombe/Unboxed and Free
